I’m so glad you guys take out the time to go through my blog everyday!
There have been influencers from time to time who were inspired by Vanitas. Someone like Audrey Flack to Christian Louboutin all are great influncers in their respective fields. But for some reasons while I was researching on all my Vanitas still life, I was constantly thinking about the famous painter Frida Kahlo.
Frida Kahlo: Self Potrait
I could find so much common in the Art moment for 17th century and Mexicon artist Frida Kahlo.
A lady who is the perfect example of how one should live and love life! How it’s important to let go of the pain. No matter how bad a situation turns, never back down.
A painter, a lover and a feminist, Frida was everything that we still need in our times! She infuses positivity and realism in people.
Frida Kahlo was a woman who went through a lot in her life from suffering from polio as a child and then surviving a major accident in her teenage. Frida painted many self-portrait while she was home and recovering from her injuries.
She painted herself enhancing the masculine features like the eyebrows and mustache. I believe her feminist perspective behind a unibrow or facial hair was to depict power!
Frida Kahlo: Tree of Hope
The mexican artist also went through a major phase when she painted Still lives. Her still life paintings weren’t very easy to understand and so they aren’t as popular as her self-portraits. Frida considered still life as a medium to portray death as the ultimate end of all. Which is exactly what Vanitas painting also state.
Frida Kahlo: Still life
One of her average known still life consists of a skull with flowers on the head. The kind that Frida Kahlo wears in her hair. For Frida, painting flowers was a way to keep them alive because other wise they are all meant to die which is what the skull depicts.
Frida Kahlo: Still life
Her other still lives consist of Human organs along side flowers showing how vulnerable and uncertain life is.
Frida was a lady of honour and glory. When people asked her about her painting and the depiction of organs and skulls, she said that she stated the reality of life. She is an influencer to the world because even though her life was a fair mess and she was broken and despite believing in realism, she still had hopes in her heart and still loved warmly. She fought for feminism and cared about her love ones.
Frida Kahlo: Mexican Artist
I see Frida Kahlo as my muse for the still life idea. Her beliefs were similar to vanitas. Her painting consisted brilliant use of colours. She too painted still life and had a message behind it. I could also connect a luxury brand like Christian Louboutin with her because of the branding that they associated with their work. For Louboutin it is the red shiny sole while for Frida it was her self portraits. Also the classic bow is a kind of embellishment that can make everything prettier which was Kahlo’s take on flowers and ribbons.
I hope after reading this, you too could connect with Frida Kahlo as a source of inspiration the way I could.
Sharing with you guys, the final still life that I created in my final post for the blog series about The Modern Baroque.
