The Modern Baroque

Vanitas- Still life painting(1)

Hi guys,

Hope you’re doing well.

I’m Kajal Singh, a fashion student and this is my creative space!

While working on my college assignments I usually come across some fascinating art and cultural history and this particular page is an appreciation to one such beautiful and vivid art movement I came across.

Firstly, thank you so much for taking out time and reading my blog. If you find this interesting, you too are someone who understands and adores ART.

For me, Fashion is Art!

Vanitas – Still life painting (2) Depiction of venetian silver vessels and the falling of light

Over the years, great designers have found their inspiration from artist belonging to different eras who as a matter of fact found their inspiration from cultures and movements.

Here I’m talking about one such crutial Art Movement- VANITAS,  which is not just visually stunning but also has major teaching behind it.

Vanitas is an art form from the 17th Century. When the trade flourished in Neatherland and the Burghers (Civilans) began to own wealth. Their lifestyle eventually changed becoming luxurious that is predominant in their ‘Still Life paintings’ which uses silverware and exotic fruits.

Vanitas- still life painting(3) Display of abundance and opulence

Because of the Dutch people being Calvinist, their belief in death being inevitable is also depicted majorly in their still life paintings shown by objects such as melting candles and skulls.

An important branch of the Vanitas style painting grew when wealth further increased and households became bountiful with objects like venetian glass and oriental rugs thus showcasing such opulence in the paintings.

It’s beautiful to witness such creativity on canvas which represents something larger than life.

Everything from the heavy use of pigmentations to the detail oriented use of light on the objects drew my attention to write about Vanitas.

With my interest in Vanitas art, I too decided on creating my own still life shot inspired by the baroque art giving it a fashionably modern spin.

Watch out this space to join my journey to the creation of SS19 version of Vanitas still life art!

See you next time!
